We're thrilled to announce that Active Health is the first practice in the Riverina registered to offer GLA:D programs!

This program is designed for individuals with hip and knee osteoarthritis, combining education and supervised, standardised yet personalised exercises. Participants will attend sessions twice a week for 6–8 weeks, tailored to support better movement and quality of life.

What is GLA:D ?

GLA:D , "Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark," is an evidence-based program developed in Denmark and brought to Australia in 2016. It aims to help people with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA) through education and exercise. The program has shown significant success in reducing pain, improving function, and potentially avoiding surgery.

What’s involved in the program

  1. Initial assessment: Evaluate your current physical function.
  2. Education: Two sessions on OA, risk factors, treatments, and  self-management.
  3. Exercise: Group classes twice a week for six weeks, focusing on strength, joint control, and confidence.
  4. Follow-up: A 3-month review to track progress and goals.
  5. Outcome tracking: Surveys at registration, 3 months, and 12 months to assess changes in pain, function, and quality of life.

Who can join?

Anyone with hip or knee osteoarthritis can join. A referral is not needed, but it’s best to check with your clinician if the program suits your needs.

Why GLA:D ?

GLA:D offers a non-surgical, low-risk approach to managing osteoarthritis. Studies show a 23-31% reduction in pain and improved quality of life, with fewer participants opting for surgery after completing the program. The exercises can be easily integrated into daily life, helping you stay active and reduce symptoms.

Program benefits

  • Reduces pain and medication usage
  • Improves joint strength and stability
  • Enhances quality of life
  • Reduces surgery likelihood
