The "Turtle Shell" Test (Physiotherapy)

Perfect for: Parents of primary and high schoolers.

Is your child doing the "Turtle Walk"? We’ve all seen it—kids leaning so far forward to counter the weight of their school bag that they look like they’re about to tip over!

A heavy or poorly fitted backpack is a leading cause of back and neck pain in students. Before they rush out the door, do this 3-Point Check:

  1. Two Straps Always: Slinging it over one shoulder causes the spine to lean sideways. Both straps must be used to distribute the load evenly.
  2. High & Tight: The bag should sit high on the back—not sagging down past their bum. Tighten the straps so the bag moves with them, not against them.
  3. The 10% Rule: Ideally, the bag shouldn't weigh more than 10% of your child's body weight. If it’s heavier, check if they are carrying unnecessary textbooks (or bricks!).

A quick “Turtle Shell” check takes less than a minute, but it can save weeks or even months of back and neck pain. Small adjustments today can make a big difference to how your child feels at school tomorrow.
